The most common tree inside Masjid Al-Aqsa is the olive tree. Scholars like Al-Qurtubi and Ibn Kathir suggest that when the Qur’an says “By the fig and the olive”, the olive symbolises Masjid Al-Aqsa.
The name "Ghamaama" refers to the clouds that shaded the Prophet ﷺ during salah, protecting him from the sun’s rays. This divine moment left an indelible mark on the site’s legacy. The masjid was constructed during the reign of Umar ibn Abdul Aziz رحمه الله in 86 AH, making it one of Madinah’s oldest and most treasured masjids.
The Umayyads built the Dome of the Rock over 1350 years ago and adorned it with mosaic tiles inside and out. In 1552, Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent replaced the exterior mosaic tiles with 45,000 blue Qashani tiles due to the constant need for repairs to the Umayyad mosaics exposed to the elements.
The magnificent calligraphy adorning the Qibla wall in Masjid Nabawi was crafted by Palestinian calligrapher Abdullah Bakr Al-Zuhdi bin Abdul Qader Afandi Al-Tamimi, a descendant of Tamim Al-Dari رضي الله عنه.
The brilliant blue tiles adorning the Dome of the Rock are not the originals. The Umayyads initially decorated the building with magnificent mosaics when it was completed in 691 CE, but centuries of exposure eventually took their toll.
This is the ‘Khokha of Umar’s Family,’ رضي الله عنهم, a historic window in the Qibla wall of Masjid Nabawi. It has remained open for over 1,400 years, symbolising Hafsa bint Umar رضي الله عنها, the wife of Rasulullah ﷺ, and her unique connection to the Prophet ﷺ.
With over 200 remarkable landmarks, Masjid al-Aqsa is more than sacred history. It is a living testimony to hope. Every dome, arch, minbar and marble panel tells a story. Even the most overlooked features hold powerful lessons.
The Rukn al-Yamani, a corner of the Ka’bah that bears the blessed legacy of Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام is one of only two corners preserved from his original construction and Rasulullah ﷺ would touch it with his noble hand, teaching us its profound significance.
