Why Zaytoon?
The word Zaytoon means olive, a blessed tree mentioned in the Qur’an and closely connected to the sacred land of Masjid al-Aqsa.
"By the fig and the olive."
[Sūrat al-Tīn 95:1]
A number of classical scholars of tafsir understood Allah’s oath by the olive as a reference to Bayt al-Maqdis and Masjid al-Aqsa.
The olive is also described in the Qur’an as a blessed tree:
﴾ يُوقَدُ مِن شَجَرَةٍ مُّبَارَكَةٍ زَيْتُونَةٍ ﴿“
…lit from the oil of a blessed olive tree…” [Sūrat al-Nūr 24:35]
Our story began with educational journeys to Masjid al-Aqsa. Those journeys developed into a wider commitment to Islamic education, scholarly guidance and serving the needs of the Muslim community.
The olive tree, with its deep roots and resilience, became a fitting symbol of the kind of connection to faith we wanted to nurture.We realised that our community needed that same rooted connection to faith here at home.
A Legacy Preserved.
A New Chapter Built.
Before it became home to Zaytoon, 23 Arden Road, Birmingham had long served the local Muslim community as Aston’s first Masjid and Madrasah. When its future became uncertain, we stepped forward to preserve the building as a place of worship and Islamic learning.
But our aim was never simply continue what had existed before. We wanted to raise the standard of Islamic education, respond to the needs of Muslims today and build something that would continue serving far beyond the walls of one building.
The building carries an important history. What has been built from it is the next chapter.
